From Standard to FC Porto

As soon as he arrived at Standard Liège in 2008, the 16 year old Eliaquim Mangala surprised people with his very mature style of playing. He started as a left back in the Under 17 team but was quickly promoted to the Under 19 squad, where he played as a defensive midfielder due to his proven performances.

When he was 17 years old he was already playing regularly for the Under 21 team. This is where his career turned: his assist for Milan Jovanovic in his first appearance in the starting eleven (January 2009) announced a promising career. On the 16th of September of 2009, Mangala continued to prove his talent by scoring Standard Liège’s first Champions League goal ever against Arsenal after only two minutes of the game…

Scouts kept a close eye on Mangala’s achievements as he continued to improve. The young player started to attract the interest of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
In August 2011 he was transferred to FC Porto for 6.5 million euros where he played as a centre back.
